SYMPTOMS
When you dial into a Remote Access Services (RAS) server from a Windows 95/98 Dial-Up Networking client, you may be prompted to change your password. When you attempt to do so, you may receive one of the following error messages:
Error 709: Cannot establish the Dial-Up Networking session. Check your
server type settings in the properties of the connection, and try the
connection again.
No domain server was available to validate your password.

This behavior can occur if the wrong user credentials are being passed to the Windows NT server.

RESOLUTION
WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
For information about how to edit the registry, view the Changing Keys And Values Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the Add and Delete Information in the Registry and Edit Registry Data Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).
To work around this behavior, use either of the following methods:
Method 1
Leave the user name, password, and domain name blank when you create a phone book entry for dialing into the Windows NT server. This ensures that you are prompted for those credentials.
Method 2
Using Registry Editor, add the Domain string value with a value data of domain name, where domain name is the domain server validating your credentials, to the following registry key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\RemoteAccess\Profile\lt;connection namegt;
where connection name is the name of the Dial-Up Networking connection you are using.
NOTE: If the User string value is not in the registry key, add it with a value data of username, where username is the name you use to log on to the domain server.
